Kfar Sava couple faces charge of severely abusing daughters

A Kfar Sava couple is suspected of seriously abusing two of its daughters, six and eight. The two girls, along with their three-year-old sister, were settled yesterday in foster homes.

On Friday, the Kfar Sava Magistrate's Court ordered the father, a 31-year-old dentist, held in remand until Tuesday. The mother, also a dentist, was placed under house arrest with relatives.

During their interrogation, asked to explain their actions, the father said this was the customary way of educating children in Argentina, from where the couple moved to Israel some six years ago.

The father is suspected of having treated his daughters as his slaves, beating them with sticks and pipes, among other implements, when they failed to answer to his beck and call.
Sources from the Sharon police district said testimony from the two girls indicated that the father was dominant and imposed "a reign of terror" in the home. Apparently, at least once, the father allegedly beat the girls' mother, too. Despite this, the mother is also suspected of beating the two girls, and even of biting them a number of times.

Police are also investigating whether the girls' younger sister also suffered abuse at the hands of her parents.

The head of the Sharon police district's investigation department, Superintendent Gil Freedman, told Haaretz yesterday that an inquiry began after school officials noticed that the eight-year-old girl was in pain and had trouble sitting down on her chair in class. After the school officials questioned the girl and heard of the alleged abuse, the matter was passed on to the welfare authorities and the police.

Freedman said the parents allegedly abused their daughters on and off for at least two years. The father continued to stress that the couple's actions had been nothing more than a legitimate way of disciplining children. He denied beating his daughters with sticks and pipes.

Three sisters from Kfar Sava were transferred to a foster home on Saturday, after their parents were arrested on suspicion of abusing the older girls, aged six and eight.

During their interrogation, the parents claimed that they beat their children to discipline them.
Police were informed of the situation by the school the eldest daughter attends. After the report was filed, the older girls were questioned. The two told of their parents' ongoing violent behavior.

The parents, both dentists, admitted to a number of the suspicions during their interrogation. The two were arrested following the questioning, and a Kfar Sava Magistrates Court judge extended the father's remand until Tuesday, while releasing the mother to house arrest.
