Testifying yesterday at a parliamentary committee hearing that addresses trafficking in women, the head of the police intelligence department, Major General Ilan Franco, said police have compiled a list of 70 trafficking suspects, and are tracing their financial activities in order to expose the economic base of organized crime. Calling 2003 "a peak year for organized crime in Israel," Franco said there are some 50 major crime organizations at large. Attorney Yehuda Shefer, who has been active in efforts to crack down on money laundering, said at the hearing that illegal black-market activity has a volume of some $3 billion a year in Israel.
